Understanding Employee Experiences Working Virtually – the Good and Bad

Workplace of the Future

Business Services

The pandemic has changed the way people work. Companies and their employees had to quickly pivot to a virtual work environment. Our client, a Global Fortune 100 company with more than 600,000 employees worldwide, needed to understand the impact of the lock down on the company’s most important asset, the employees. How has working virtually impacted morale, productivity, and work-life balance? What will the workplace environment look like once the pandemic is behind us?

We consulted with the core team responsible for shaping the company’s vision for what the workplace of the future will be to understand their goals and the information they needed to meet those objectives. We then fielded virtual focused group discussions among employees across different organizations, at different tenure levels, and at different organizational levels.

The work uncovered some revelations. The employees shared stories of how working virtually has improved their productivity and work-life balance. Granted, there were also challenges, but the benefits derived from a more flexible work environment outweighed any issues encountered. This information fueled decisions about how the new normal will look, and we continued the engagement on another project to map the experience journey for that post-pandemic workstyle.
